Duties of Members
Membership in the Legion of Mary is both a privilege and a sacred responsibility. Each Legionary is called not merely to belong, but to serve faithfully as an instrument of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the work of bringing Christ to souls. The duties of members are rooted in prayer, discipline, apostolic service, and personal holiness, forming a complete spiritual life united with action.
Duties of Active Members
Active members are the working core of the Legion. Their responsibilities are clear, practical, and spiritual.
1. Attendance at the Weekly Praesidium Meeting
Active members must attend the weekly meeting faithfully and punctually. This meeting is the heart of the Legion’s life, where members pray together, receive formation, and report on their apostolic work. Regular attendance strengthens unity, accountability, and spiritual growth.
2. Performance of Weekly Apostolic Work
Each active member accepts and carries out a definite apostolic assignment given at the meeting, normally requiring about two hours per week. This work is done in a spirit of faith, charity, and obedience, always in union with Mary. The apostolate may include visitation of the sick, evangelization, parish outreach, or other works of mercy suited to local needs.
3. Daily Prayer of the Catena Legionis
Active members are required to pray the Catena Legionis each day. This prayer, centered on the Magnificat, unites every Legionary with the whole Legion throughout the world and renews their consecration to Mary and her mission.
4. Confidentiality and Reverence
All matters discussed in meetings and encountered during apostolic work must be treated with strict confidentiality and respect. Legionaries must always protect the dignity and privacy of those they serve.
5. Obedience to the Legion’s Spirit and Discipline
Members are called to maintain the Legion’s spirit of humility, charity, obedience, and fidelity. They accept assignments willingly, remain faithful to the Handbook, and cooperate with the officers and Spiritual Director.
6. Personal Spiritual Growth
Active members are expected to cultivate a strong interior life through regular reception of the sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist and Confession, daily prayer, devotion to Our Lady, and sincere effort toward holiness.
Duties of Auxiliary Members
Auxiliary members share fully in the Legion’s mission through prayer.
1. Daily Recitation of the Rosary
Auxiliary members pray the Rosary every day, offering it for the intentions of the Legion and its apostolic work throughout the world.
2. Daily Prayer of the Catena Legionis (Adjutorian Members)
Adjutorian members, a higher level of auxiliary membership, also pray the Catena Legionis daily and attend Mass and receive Holy Communion frequently, when possible.
Through these prayers, auxiliary members provide essential spiritual strength to the active apostolate, supporting the Legion’s mission in a hidden but powerful way.
The Spirit of Legion Membership
All Legionaries, whether active or auxiliary, serve under the maternal leadership of the Blessed Virgin Mary. They strive to imitate her humility, purity, obedience, and faith. The Legion calls its members not only to perform tasks, but to become holy—to allow Mary to form Christ within them and to bring His presence to others.
Faithfulness in these duties ensures that the Legion remains strong, united, and fruitful. Through prayer, sacrifice, and apostolic service, each member helps advance the mission of the Church and participates in the work of salvation.
Serving beneath the standard of Mary, Legionaries offer themselves completely to God’s glory, trusting that even the smallest acts done through her will bear eternal fruit.
